A technical indicator used with the purpose of identifying the overall trend over different time periods. Used as a price indicator to determine moves in the market, pivot points are calculated as the average of the high, low and close of a trading period. Should the trading period following the period in which the pivot point was calculated exceed the pivot point, it is viewed as a bullish signal. The opposite is true of a trading period which trades lower than the pivot point. Pivot point analysis is often used in conjunction with support and resistance levels.
