All stock exchanges have indexes which provide averages of the prices of their listed shares. These averages are normally "weighted" so that larger companies are more important and smaller companies have less of an impact. The JSE Overall Index contains all the shares in the sectoral indexes. Some listed companies are considered too small to be included in the JSE Overall index and they are included in the JSE Fledgling index. The JSE overall index is divided into the JSE Top 40 index which is the 40 largest companies by free-float market capitalisation trading on the JSE. Next is the JSE Mid-cap index which includes the next 60 largest companies and then finally the JSE Small cap index which includes all the remaining shares from the JSE overall that are not in the JSE Top 40 and Mid cap.
