A grouping of all shares in the same industry, usually represented by a sector index. If you look at the price page of your newspaper, you will see that the share market is divided into sectors. The market is divided into the following sectors: Oil & Gas, Industrials, Consumer Goods, Healthcare, Consumer Services, Telecommunications Utilities, Financials and Technology. These sectors are then further divided into sub-sectors. Each sector has an index which is an actuarially weighted average of the shares in that sector. To get an overview of the performance of the various sectors and sub-sectors you should go to your software's "market carpets" feature.
