A regulatory body which monitors and regulates the trading of futures contracts in America. The CFTC was established in 1974 and brought together the various Federal laws governing futures trading which had been implemented since 1920. Futures contracts have existed in the US economy for at least 150 years and probably began with "bear" trades where trappers would sell the furs of bears that they had not yet killed to take advantage of temporarily higher prices. This gave rise to the term "bear trade" and hence the term "bear market". More information about the CFTC can be found on their website at: https://www.cftc.gov/
