An index, which was started in February 2023, (the PUI) to measure policy uncertainty in South Africa by surveying articles from the top 20 media publications in South Africa. A search is conducted for key words such as policy, inflation, rand, taxes, strike action, protest action and constitutional amendment. A panel of 25 economists then evaluate the material to arrive at an index which is either positive below 50 (i.e. indicating reduced policy uncertainty) and negative above 50 (i.e. indicating heightened policy uncertainty). Professor Raymond Parsons of the North-West University compiles the index. The PUI was 65,5 for the three months ending December 2023, a slight improvement from the September 2023 quarter's reading of 71,8.
