This is an index produced by Unisa in conjunction with Momentum which measures the ability of consumers to cope financially. The index is compiled from data obtained from 98 respondents - mainly banks, insurance companies, credit providers, retailers, municipalities and other organisations involved in consumer research. In the second quarter of 2022 the index dropped to 53,4 (in the first quarter) to 48,5 showing that South African consumers were taking considerable strain from the sharp rise in the petrol price, rising interest rates, rising food prices and a spike in loadshedding. Obviously, consumers' ability to come out on their monthly income is a key determinant of consumer spending and hence gross domestic product (GDP).
