Also known as "Slapp" lawsuit, this is an action initiated by a powerful or wealthy person or organisation to muzzle an activist and ruin them financially. An example of a Slapp lawsuit is the defamation case brought against Barbara Tanton, a 72-year-old nursery school principal, by the erstwhile Eskom CEO, Matshela Koko. Koko sued Tanton for R500 000 because of a tweet which she posted. Koko lost the case and may well have to pay costs.
