Contingent business interruption (CBI) is a type of business insurance that covers a business against the interruption of its business by a disaster. The business can claim an amount equal to the difference between what it would have earned had the disaster not occurred and what it did actually earn. In 2020 a number of companies successfully claimed against their CBI policies as a result of business interruptions during the COVID-19 lockdowns. Sanlam provided an additional R1,7bn to cover such claims in 2020.
