Definition

Natural gas is a clean burning hydrocarbon, producing far less carbon dioxide and air pollutants compared to coal, when used to generate electricity. It is abundant, there are estimated to be enough gas resources to last more then 200 years. It is a good partner to renewable energy resources, like solar and wind, which are only available when the sun shines or the wind blows. Petro SA has an off-shore gasfield in the Bredasdorp basin and supplies the refinery in Mossel Bay. Towards the end of 2020, Total made a significant gas condensate discovery in the Outeniqua Basin, 175 kilometres off the southern coast of South Africa. This discovery is adjacent to the Brulpadda discovery (2019). Total has previously stated that the Brulpadda field could hold between 500 million to over 1 billion barrels of oil equivalent.
