A term used to describe preference shares which do not accumulate their dividends. Most preference shares are cumulative in that if the company does not pay the preference dividend in one year then it accumulates until the next year, and so on until the company is able to pay it. Non-cumulative preference shares do not have this benefit and so are riskier.
