The imposition by government of a limit on the amount of a certain product that can be produced. Government's sometimes decide that the unlimited production of certain products is not in the best interests of the country. In such cases they may impose a quota system limiting the amount which each supplier in that industry can produce. A good example, of this is the fishing quotas applied in South Africa. The government is cognisant of the dangers of over-fishing and so limits the industry to catch and produce only a specific amount of certain types of fish. The allocation of quotas falls under the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.
