A messenger at the London Stock Exchange who takes messages between stockbrokers and their clients. The term originates in the 17th century when people wishing to buy and sell shares congregated at specific cafe's in London to do their business. The waiters acted as agents between buyers and sellers, giving information about who was selling or buying specific shares.
