This is where a company owns or tries to own its entire supply chain. So, it might begin by selling sauces to retailers and then buy the manufacturer that makes the sauces and then establish a chain of retail outlets to sell the sauces to the public. This type of vertical integration has the advantage that more of the profits from the industry are retained in the business. There can also be some significant economies of scale which make this type of acquisition attractive.
