The shares listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) which are available for private shareholders to choose from. There are about 350 listed companies on the JSE, and that number has been declining for the past ten years. From these shares, private investors must select those shares which interest them enough to include on a "watch list". Then from the shares on his/her watch list the private investor must select those shares to buy and include in their portfolio. New shares are constantly coming into the universe of listed shares and others are leaving. For example, during 2020 Prosus and Multichoice were spun out of Naspers and separately listed. Other shares are being de-listed because they have not complied with JSE rules or because they have been acquired by other companies in a merger or acquisition.
