The corruption of the state and particularly state funding by persons in positions of power for their own personal gain. State capture has been a feature of African politics for decades and has caused the virtual collapse of some African economies, most notably Zimbabwe. In South Africa, state capture was introduced by Jacob Zuma during his nine years as president aided and abetted by the Gupta family. On President Ramaphosa's accession in 2017, he established the Zondo Commission to investigate state capture and in 2020 he arranged that the evidence gathered by that commission could be shared with the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) for indicting and convicting those guilty of state capture.
