These are additional foreign exchange assets in a country's reserves as a result of its membership of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). They were originally created in 1969 to compensate for the lower levels of gold and foreign exchange, but today they are allocated to countries which can then draw down on them in a time of financial crisis. South Africa drew down on its SDR's during the COVID-19 crisis.
