An index of listed companies that comply with Shariah law. South Africa has about 850 000 Muslims in its population and many of them are concerned for their investments to be Shariah compliant. In 2008, the JSE launched an index of those listed companies that were Shariah compliant in conjunction with the FTSE Group. To qualify for inclusion in the index, a company must undergo a strict screening process which precludes companies involved in the sale of alcohol, weapons, foods which are not halaal, tobacco, entertainment and conventional finance. Companies are re-assessed every three months.
