A derivative instrument where the holder buys the variance from a future strike price at a specific future date. In South Africa these are known as "savi squared" and they allow investors to gain exposure to market volatility. The JSE says, "On expiry, the holder receives the difference for every point that the stock’s realised variance has exceeded the variance strike price."
