Definition

An individual who specialises in quantitative analysis of shares and other investment instruments such as derivatives. With the advent of high-speed computers, a profession of analysts has arisen to take advantage of and develop highly complex mathematical models and trading strategies on equity and derivative markets. These people are known as "quants". Quants need to be skilled in maths, finance and computer programming and they are very highly paid. They work for investment banks and hedge funds.
