A written agreement by one party (the payor) to pay another (the payee) a specific sum of money on a specific date or on demand. A promissory note is thus a debt instrument. The note will usually give the principal amount and any interest due on that amount. Promissory notes are typically short-term and are not normally negotiable. They are used for short-term financing of companies.
