A collective investment scheme (CIS) where the funds used are invested into equity (and sometimes debt instruments) in the hopes of generating a return for the investors. Sometimes a private equity fund (PEF) will invest in an unlisted company or a new venture which shows promise. The objective is always to ultimately list the venture and liquidate the investment. Companies like Ninety-One and Old Mutual manage PEFs.
