An adjustment which is made for an error in the financial statements of a previous accounting period. Occasionally, the accountants make a mistake in the financials which is not picked up by the auditors. It even happens in the published financials of listed companies. The solution is to pass a prior year adjustment to rectify the mistake. Obviously, any prior year adjustment must be reported and explained.
