A mining term which refers to a body of ore which is left in place to support the roof. Normally when the mine is worked out, the last action would be to mine the pillars for whatever ore can be recovered. The space between the pillars is known as rooms and the exact size of the pillars and rooms is a highly specialized and scientific calculation which depends on the type of ore body and many other factors. It obviously impacts significantly on the profitability of the mine.
