A facility offered by commercial banks to their credit-worthy clients. Most companies finance their working capital requirements with an overdraft, even if they are cash-positive because then incoming sales immediately reduce the overdraft balance and thus save interest expense. An overdraft must be added to the company's other liabilities (such as creditors and long-term loans) to determine the company's level of gearing.
