A mineral with the chemical symbol "Ni". Nickel oxidises slowly and only very small quantities are found in nature and is most commonly found in iron pentlandite and with sulphur. Australia and Indonesia together have close to half of the world's nickel. Most (about 68%) nickel is used in the manufacture of stainless steel and a small quantity is used for plating. South Africa is among the top nickel producers in the world with mines at Nkomati in Mpumalanga and new mines at Zebedelia and Burgersfort.
