The additional profits which a monopoly can generate because there are no close substitutes for its product and no competitors. Monopolist profits are rare and usually occur because of a geographic monopoly where the nearest competition is far away enough to allow the supplier to increase prices to a small extent. A country supermarket where the nearest competitor is 50km away could increase prices to the point where it becomes worthwhile for local consumers to travel to the next town.
