This refers to the production of the manufacturing sector of the economy. Its production excludes mining production and agricultural production and it accounts for approximately 11% of gross domestic product. Manufacturing production is measured every month by Statistics South Africa and compared with the same month in the previous year. For example, manufacturing production during August 2020 was 10,8% lower than in August 2019. The fall was mainly due to the slow recovery from the lockdown period as a result of COVID-19. Many factories were not deemed to be essential services and so were temporarily closed. Manufacturing is also measured by the ABSA production managers index every month, which is compiled from a survey of production managers and their perception of their industry.
