This is a scheme which was launched at a conference held in Kimberley in 2000 and was subsequently the subject of a United Nations resolution to certify rough diamonds. The objective was to stop the trade in what are known as "blood diamonds" which were mined under unacceptable conditions and sold, with the money being used to finance various terrorist organisations in Africa. The scheme consists of a series of warranties which is accepted by all participating countries.
