A method of extracting, particularly gold, from mined ore. The ore is crushed and heaped on a waterproof surface that the leaching solution can be applied to. The solution dissolves the gold. The solution is then collected and the gold is recovered. The invention of the technique was a major cost saving in the gold mining industry in the early 1940's and gave many South African mines a new lease of life, making it profitable to mine ore bodies at lower grades and greater depths.
