This is a percentage of a company's equity and profits that is not paid for. This is typically enforced by law in favour of the government on a business, usually a mining company, for the exploitation of a specific type of mineral. In South Africa, the Mining Charter was originally framed with a free carry interest of 10% in favour of the communities where the company operated. The Minerals Council was opposed to the free carry because it would discourage investment.
