Definition

This is a collective investment scheme which has at least 85% of its investments outside South Africa all the time. Collective investment schemes are controlled by the Collective Investment Schemes Act (45 of 2002). They are schemes where the public invest and which are managed by professional managers under strict conditions. They take the form of unit trusts and exchange traded funds (ETF). A foreign CIS gives South Africans a way to gain exposure to overseas investments.
