An exempted micro enterprise (EME) is a small business in South Africa that is exempted from the requirements of the Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment Act (53 of 2003) because of its small size. Any business that has been in existence for less than a year or has a turnover of less than R10m is automatically given level 4 status. It is exempted from the requirements of the BBBEE scorecard and considered to be compliant. Such a company can obtain a valid EME BEE certificate - which can now be replaced by a simple affidavit from the company.
