Definition

Every week there are a variety of economic indicators which are published. The Business Day runs a special column on Mondays explaining which indicators are going to be published that week and gives economists' projections for what they might be. Indicators like consumer spending, credit extension or the level of new car sales can give you a good idea of where the economy is headed. Other indicators like the money supply (M3) or the balance of payments (BOP) or the strength of the rand can show how well we are perceived to be managing the economy.
