In the share market this refers to a company's size and its ability to achieve economies of scale in its production. Smaller companies are often at a disadvantage because they do not have the scale of larger companies. Perhaps the best example of this is Cell-C which competes with MTN and Vodacom in the cell phone business. It has battled to achieve sufficient subscribers to make it profitable. In other words, it lacks the scale of its two larger competitors.
