One of the elements with the symbol "cu". Copper is a maleable base metal which conducts electricity and heat very efficiently. It is used for most electrical wiring, in plumbing and construction. It is usually mined in open pit operations with Chile producing about one third of the world's copper exports. In South Africa, there is one major copper deposit in a pipe at Phalaborwa. That copper mine is a subsidiary of Rio Tinto with Anglo holding a minority stake.
