A security which is represented by a certificate. This can be the case for equity shares in South Africa, but since dematerialisation in about the year 2000, most shares are uncertificated and represented simply by an alignement of electronic particles on a hard drive at the central securities depository or their participants. You can get a hard copy share certificate, but it will cost you more, so most investors do not bother.
