A CSDP is a person authorised to perform custodial, administrative or settlement duties. The central securities depository (CSD) in South Africa is known as STRATE (Share TRAnsactions Totoally Electronic). It is licensed by the Financial Services Board (FSB) to maintain records of listed shares and other securities and to record the transfer, clearing and settlement of transactions. All trades must go through an appointed CSDP appointed by the CSD. All stockbroking firms have a CSDP who acts for them. There are 8 registered CSDP's for equities who are mostly the commercial banks in South Africa with the exception of Computershare. There are also CSDP's in the bond market and the current money market.
