Definition

This is a state-owned and controlled company established in terms of the Central Energy Fund Act (38 of 1977) which was originally established by the National Party in the 1950's to create secure energy sources for the country. On its website, the company lists its subsidaries as:

<li>AEMFC – which mines coal in Mpumalanga for supply to Eskom.</li>
<li>iGAS – which is a shareholder in the Mozambique-to-South Africa gas pipeline and is involved in the development of other gas delivery projects.</li>
<li>PASA – which is the national petroleum and gas promotion and licensing agency</li>
<li>PetroSA – which is the largest subsidiary in the Group and operates a gas-to-liquids refinery that uses indigenous gas as feedstock. It is also a partner in a producing oil field in Ghana.</li>
<li>SFF – which manages strategic crude oil infrastructure, strategic crude oil stocks, and provides oil pollution control services in Saldanha Bay</li>
</ul>
Petro SA has been a big drain on the company's finances losing R14,6bn in the 2015 financial year.
