A technique whereby cyanide leaching and granulated activated carbon are used to absorb precious metals. The "loaded" carbon is then separated and the gold extracted. The carbon and cyanide are then re-used. This technique was developed in the 1930's and gave gold mines in South Africa a new lease of life because it became cheaper to extract gold. Mines could profitably go deeper and had extended lives as a result.
