A startup company, usually in high-tech or communications that reaches a valuation of over $1bn. The term was coined by the venture capital investor, Aileen Lee, in a 2013 New York Times Article, "Welcome to the Unicorn Club - Learning from Billion Dollar Startups". By April 2020 there were 465 unicorns according to Google. These companies are usually characterised by disruptive technologies which grow very rapidly.
