An economic indicator that moves in the same direction as the business cycle. In other words, it turns when the economy as a whole turns, either up or down. Obviously, the country's gross domestic product (GDP) increases and decreases as the business cycle rises and falls and so it is a coinciding indicator. Some indicators move in the opposite direction to the economy such as the level of interest rates. When that is rising, the level of economic activity is generally falling.
