MSCI is an American producer and calculator of international indexes for the share market and fixed income securities. Their indexes go back to 1969. The most important of these for South African investors is the MSCI Emerging Markets index which shows the average performance of 23 countries' overall stock market indexes. It is always interesting to compare the MSCI Emerging Markets index with the JSE Overall index to see whether our stock market is faring better or worse than emerging markets generally. It can put the moves in our share market into better international perspective. You display the MSCI Emerging Markets Index on your software by typing in "I-MSCI". In November 2023 the index stood at 3985 - almost half of its peak at 5794 on 16th February 2021. This reflects a shift towards "risk-off" among international investors.
